Warhol

A versatile blend inspired by the pops of electric colors that the pop artist icon of the 1950s-1980s Andy Warhol gravitated towards when creating his paintings. A total of 4 vibrant shades from our Solid Color Merino Wool Top Collection are featured in this blended roving: Hot PinkTurquoiseChartreuse, and Violet. These effervescent colors are slightly blended with sparkling white and yellow mulberry silk and a deep shade of flax appropriately named Noir. Suitable for spinning, blending, felting, and weaving. As the great Warhol once said, “Art is what you can get away with!” Dive into this exclusive blend and let your imagination take control.

Why we love it:

The fibers in this blend are not blended to the point that all the colors mix to create one heathered shade. There is a clear separation of fibers and colors making it easy to pull individual hues out for custom crafting. If you wish to have a more blended preparation to work with, this fiber can easily be blended further on a pair of hand cards, combs, a blending board, a hackle, or a drum carder to create a unique, heathered, and colorful fiber. The colors and textures in this blend make for a truly unique and exciting experience.

Details:

50% Merino 23 micron in 4 colors: Hot Pink, Turquoise, Chartreuse, and Violet.
25% Grade A Mulberry Silk in 2 colors: White and Sunset.
25% Flax Linen in the color Noir

Staple length: 4-7 inches
Micron Count: 18-25

Diamond

Dazzle the world with every step that you take with our lustrous and ultra-soft Diamond Sock Blend. Inspired by diamond dust, a glittering glass material that can be applied to ink and paper in the silkscreen printing process to create a textured and luminous finish, this blend of Nylon and Glitter Merino’s essence is essentially the same. Many artists such as Andy Warhol and Russell Young use the famed diamond dust cover in their works to give them an added sense of significance and depth respectively. As anyone who has seen a diamond-dusted work in person can say, they capture the light in a way that beautifully plays to the colors on the work while bringing about a shining aura. Similarly to diamond dust, our Diamond blend can greatly enhance any fiber project by adding value and beauty whether plying, blending, felting, dyeing, or weaving. As the great Warhol once said, “Art is what you can get away with!” Dive into this exclusive blend and let your imagination take control.

Why we love it:

This fiber shines like the stars! There are two colors of Angelina Glitz fiber that dance throughout this blend. One has an ultraviolet reflection and the other is opal with many soft, opalescent, hues that create a unique glow. This is one of our go-to blends for sock knitting due to the wonderful properties of Merino wool and the added stretch thanks to the nylon. The magic doesn’t end there, this blend is gorgeous when dyed, blended with other fibers, and even plied with another contrasting fiber. The creative possibilities are endless. Your end project will certainly have a mesmerizing glow to it.

Details:

70% 23 Micron Merino Wool Top in the shade Lightning
25% Fine Denier Nylon
5% Angelina Glitz in the shade Ultra Violet and Icicle

Staple length: 3-6 inches
Micron Count: 19-23

Art Yarn Tutorial

We blend the sparkling and glowing Diamond Dust Fiber with the multi-colored extravaganza of the Warhol Pop Art blend in this video. We are using our 90 TPI Blending Board to apply a layer of Warhol to the board, brushed down with a thick bristle painters brush, and a layer of Diamond applied to the top. The Diamond looked like it was glimmering on the board as we layed it atop the blend, which made us even more thrilled to see the finished blend. We use wooden dowels to sandwich the fibers and roll/draft them off the board to create what is called a Rolag.

This Rolag was then spun on the Ashford Electric Spinner 3 to create a dazzling rainbow yarn. This Wheel is deeply loved here in Paradise, because it is portable, can fit on a tabletop, and you can adjust the speed of the whorl as you spin. Spin quickly and anywhere you please!

The fibers draft easily from the center of the rolag as you spin, creating a cozy woolen yarn with lovely pops of color. The thick and thin style really displays the variation of vibrant colors nicely in this blend. We use our Niddy Noddy to wind the freshly spun yarn off of the Electric Spinner. Set the twist of your fresh yarn in a bath of lukewarm water and give it a nice thwack and you’ve got a Warholian yarn that will dazzle and make for the most interesting knit, crochet, woven, or felted project!

What would you make with this unique yarn? We recommend the Seed Bundle Hat by Kristen Olson to show off the wild colors!
Or Maybe the Vanilla Fog Hat by Andrea Mowry is more your style? One Fiber Club Member hand spun and knit this hat using her box of Warhol and Diamond! Isn’t it fabulous!
